It doesn't matter how old you are, everybody loves a treehouse and how much fun would it be to stay in one. It can be fun for the whole family or even a romantic get away. So I did some search and found some cool treehouses you can stay in.

If you have do any traveling you know how boring and expensive it is to hang out at an airport. But every once in a while you get lucky and you find something for free. So what can you get at an airport for free?

Free Movies and Video Games
Singapore Changi
At Singapore’s Changi airport, terminal 3 there are movie theater screens that play big name Hollywood movies you can watch for free. The movies play 24 hours. Terminal 2 has free Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 gaming systems and if you want to watch your own movies, ther is free wi0fi throughout the airport, as well as 500 free internet kiosks.

Free iPads
JFK Airport New York
At JFK Airport terminal 3 has been deemed the worst terminal in America and plans are in the works to be demolish it. Until this happens Delta has installed 200 iPads at restaurants near the gate areas for passengers to use to order food. But you can also surf the web, check your email and stream video on them.

Library
Amsterdam – Schiphol
The Dutch love to read so it only made sense to put a library in the airport. The library is a showcase for Dutch culture with Dutch literature, music and even its own Twitter feed. There are also 25 iPads available for use as well.

Skype Calls
Tallinn, Estonia
Skpye, which was originally written by Estonian programmers, is available for free at Tallinn’s airport. Video chat booths can be used to make unlimited, free video calls anywhere in the world. There are also 14 free internet kiosks where you can hookup your laptop and get free wi-fi.

On the second and fourth Thursday and Friday of the month guided tours are given of San Diego’s airport and airfield, including areas out on the tarmac.

Free city tours are offered by the Taiwan Tourism Bureau in the morning and afternoon of Taipei from the Airport. Some people may be put off by the thought of taking a shower at an airport but if you have been traveling for a long time an hot shower may be too good to resist. Don’t forget to bring a towel in your carry on and while the shower is free you will have to put a little something in the vending machine for the toiletries. Coffee is offered free at various stations throughout Terminal 2.

The airport has a cultural museum and throughout the airport is a number of free cultural attractions. At one of the attractions you can dress up in traditional clothing and have your picture taken. At another location you can make your own Korean handicraft.

Costa Cruise Ship Sinking

With Costa Cruise Line's recent accident with the sinking of the Concordia, it reminds me of a post I did way back when the mega ships were first coming out on the scene. While these ships sound fantastic, I had and still have two concerns about them. First, getting lost in the crowds and having to deal with long lines on board. And second, how long would it take to evacuate the ship in an emergency and how well equipped were they to do this.

With the Costa sinking passengers are reporting that many crew members were not prepared for an evacuation and were giving passenger conflicting information. Some crew members who were assigned to operate the life boats clearly did not know how to properly operate them and actually caused some life boats to be unusable. Do cruise lines take into consideration that some life boats may malfunction or do they only have just enough life boats to cover the number of passengers and no extra.

Also as the ship became over run with water is tilted to the side which meant that the life boats on one side of the ship couldn't be lowered so what do the passengers do who were assigned to those boats do? Do cruise lines ever reviews these conditions when going over their evacuation plans?

Some passengers on the Concordia said some crew members were separating families telling them women and children were being loaded on the life boats and men had to wait or go to other life boats. One family said it reminded them of the movie The Titanic and were terrified at the thought of being separated.

So many things went wrong during this evacuation. Not to mention this disaster should have never happened in the first place. Hopefully there will be some lessons learned from this. Cruise lines with these mega ships need to take a good hard look at their evacuation plans and crew training. And make sure they take a variety of situations into consideration.

Viking Getting into Ocean Cruises

Viking who is know for their river cruises has placed an order with a French ship builder for for two 888 passenger luxury vessels which are scheduled to be delivered in the spring on 2014 and 2015. The ships will sail the Mediterranean and will have 444 cabins and 444 crew members.

Viking has not released any other information about the upcoming itineraries or the new ships. With cruise lines focusing on mega ships and passengers concerned about getting lost in the crowds, this could be a great opportunity for Viking. There may be a huge market for small ocean cruise ships.

With the smaller ships they also can get into ports that are too small for the larger ships. So the possibility for unique itineraries is very good. I am very excited to see what Viking comes up with.

Mexico Cruises Canceled

Disney cruise line has canceled four of its 7 night cruises departing from Los Angeles to Mexico departing in December 2012. The Disney Wonder cruises were scheduled to sail on Dec. 9, 16, 23 and 30 and had stops in Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas.

Disney has not said what it plans for the 1,750 passenger Wonder are or why they canceled the sailings but did say they have contacted passengers who were scheduled to take the canceled voyages and offered them the option to move to other sailing currently scheduled in 2012

Disney's Ship Vandalized

Disney's new ship the Fantasy which is being built in a shipyard in papenburg, Germany, was vandalized. The vandals caused $1.2 million in water damage to the ship.

Hopefully officals will catch these guys because we're not talking about a few dollars, its $1.2 MILLION. That's sad.

Security is being tightened around the shipyard but this is a serious lesson learned about the need for tight security.

New Airline Rules Start Jan. 1

The new airline rules start Jan. 1, 2012. No more bait and switch! Airlines can no longer quote you one price for a ticket and than when you get ready to pay for the ticket, pile a bunch of required taxes and fees on top of that price so you end up with an amount sometimes double the original price you were quoted.

Now airlines and travel agencies are required to quote you a price that includes the cost of the ticket plus all required taxes and fees.

Among the other protections:
• A ban on price increases after a ticket has been purchased
• A 24-hour window for passengers to hold or cancel a reservation without payment or penalty for reservations made a week or more before the departure date
• Required disclosure of baggage fees upon booking and on e-ticket confirmations
• Required prompt notification of delays of more than 30 minutes, cancellations and diversions
• The same baggage allowance and fees to apply throughout a passenger's trip

La Casella

More Bad News for Egypt

The sad state of Egypt’s tourism seems to be getting worse by the day. With Islamic groups dominating in Egypt, new rules are being discussed in regards to tourist. They want to restrict tourist from wearing bikinis on the beach, from drinking alcohol and mixed sun bathing on the beaches. The goal is to have “sin free” tourism.

There is even talk of refusing to let unmarried men and women from sharing a hotel room. They haven’t said whether couples wanting to share a room will have to present their marriage certificates at check-in or not. But some sort of proof would have to be presented.

Clerics are also throwing their ideas into the mix as well, with ideas like separate beaches for men and women. That sounds like a fun family vacation!

We will have to wait and see if these laws pass and how far they will go with them. One thing I am sure of is if they do pass they will have a negative effect on their tourism. Tourism makes up 10 percent of Egypt’s economy and employs 10 million people. The people in the tourist business there know just how bad these new restrictions would be for business and the country’s economy. The minister of tourism in Egypt recently held his own protest at the steps of the Great Pyramid. Good for him. Probably didn’t make any difference but good for him.

Egypt is an amazing place. It’s one of my favorite places I have been to and I hope they get this mess worked out soon and come to a conclusion that will encourage tourist to come back and not continue to scare them away. Not only for us but for the people of Egypt as well.

Southwest Airlines Returning to Reality TV

A few years ago Southeaet Airlines had a reality TV show where cameras followed ticket agents and airline reps around showing all the crazy passengers and situations they had to deal with each day. It was actually pretty entertaining. Sometimes I felt for the agents and sometimes I totally related to the passengers.

The series is set to return to the TLC network and will be taped at Baltimore-Washington and Denver airports. While the air date hasn't been set yet, the airline says viewers will see aspects of Southwest that have never been profiled in the past.

South Sudan

Who would would think the new country of South Sudan (as of July 9, 2011) has some of the most astonishing wildlife wilderness in what will soon become the Bandingalo National Park. The Bandingalo's migration of 1.2 million large animals are second only to the Serengeti's in Tanzania.

The country's new government says it wants to keep Bandingalo pristine and is in the process of approving the set up of a handful of luxury safari camps.

There is only one single track through the black cotton soil cutting across an area the size of the Netherlands. This land is so virgin there are no cattle, no people, no human footprint at all.
New Sudan is starting off as a very poor country but has this gold mine of a rich wilderness and I am so happy to hear they want to preserve it and not just suck every dollar out of it regardless the cost to the land and the animals.

Who knows, New Sudan could become the next "dream" place to go.

Preferred Suppliers

The department of transportation is considering passing a law that would require travel agencies to reveal who their preferred suppliers are. This would be a great law, here’s why. Every travel agency has preferred suppliers with whom they have negotiated higher commissions or bonuses for promoting and pushing their products before others. And when a customer asks for a suggestion or recommendation of course the agent is going to suggest someone from their preferred supplier list. In some cases agents almost refuse to sell any product from someone not on their list, for example if you walk into a AAA Automobile Club and want to book a Carnival cruise you will have to practically beg them to do it, if you can get them to do it at all.

By knowing who an agency’s preferred suppliers are maybe a little more encouraged to give fair and honest opinions and suggests.

Tricky Tipping

Most people know the basics of tipping and that they should tip their waiter, the cab driver and the porter but there are a few situations that are a little more tricky. When you book a tour sometimes the tour company will send a greeter to meet you are the airport to escort you to your driver and help load your luggage in the car. People often remember to tip the driver but forget about the greeter. Greeters should be tipped the same as the driver, about $3.00. Other tips to include are:

· Room Attendant - $5.00 per day

· Private car and driver for full day of sightseeing – $20.00 ($5-$10 for half day)

· Restroom Attendant - $2.00 per visit

· Hiking Guide - $10.00 to $15.00 per day, per person

· Whitewater Rafting - $10.00 per day

· Safari Guide - $18.00 per day (at end of trip)

· Babysitter – 20 percent of fee

· Massage Therapists – 20 percent of fee, leave money at the front desk rather than leaving it on the table.

Georgia on my Mind

Just back from a trip to Georgia. It’s the end of the fall color season, the weather was surprisingly warm. It only rained briefly one day, the rest of the time the weather was great. Some of the little differences between Georgia and California I noticed was most people don’t have fenced in backyards. It’s kind of like one big communal yard. In California everyone’s backyard is fenced in. Also no one asked me for I.D. when making a purchase with a credit card and the other thing was no paper toilet seat covers in public toilets.

Some of the highlights of our vacation included:

· Archibald Smith Plantation
The cotton plantation house was built in 1845 and was the home to 30 slaves. The wealthy Mr and Mrs Smith had 4 children, 2 boys and 2 girls. One son died in the civil war, the two girls died unmarried and the other son was the only child of the Smith’s to marry and have children. Of his children only one son married in his 60’s and with that the Smith family line died out. The Smith’s rarely threw out anything so the entire house is furnished with their personal belongings rather than just period items. It’s a fun house to look threw. Its $8.00 per person for a guided tour.

· Gem Mining
Just outside Helen Georgia there is a small place to mine for gems. It was $11.00 per bucket of dirt and they guarantee you will find something in each bucket and we did. We all came back with a baggie full of emeralds, rubies, sapphires and other gems. None worth anything but still it was a lot of fun finding them and they look really pretty.

· Glend’a Restaurant Located in Cleveland, Georgia this little, country restaurant had the best down home cooking I have ever tasted. When I first saw the place I wasn’t sure what all the fuss was about but I’ll tell you the gravy was to die for and I couldn’t stop eating the homemade rolls. The food is delicious, so if you ever find yourself in Cleveland, Georgia you have got to stop by Glenda’s.

Underwater Museum

This is one of the coolest museums you will ever see. It is an underwater sculpture museum in Cancun, Mexico. And the only way to see it is to dive down to it. Its a diver's paradise.

Each of the 400 life sized sculptures are made from ph neutral clay in order to promote the growth of coral reef and marine life with the total installation occupying an area of over 150sq metres and weighing over 120 tons.

It really is an amazing sight.

Google Throws Their Hat into the Travel Business
Google is getting into the travel market and not everybody is happy. Other travel sites such as Expedia, Travelocity and Kayak fear that Google will have the resources and the smarts to be bigger and better than the rest. Which is good news for consumers. Google’s goal is to cater more toward the consumers who are price conscience. Now that there’s some serious competition for these online travel mega-sites maybe we will see some decent prices.

American Airlines New Curb Side Service
American Airlines is expanding its curbside check-in to all departing passengers bound for an international destination, including those that require a visa check. The service will be available at 31 airports by the end of November, and the best part is there is no fee for this service.

Cunard to Start Onboard Wedding Service
Cunard is finally getting into the wedding business. Beginning next spring, guests will be able to say their “I do’s” on the Queen Mary 2, the Queen Victoria and the Queen Elizabeth. Pushy Vendors

When on vacation I always enjoy doing a little shopping. But one of the hardest things to deal with and that really takes away from an enjoyable experience is overly pushy vendors. You can find them in several different countries though Egypt is the worse place I have seen.

While in the Caribbean, as soon as we got of the bus at a tourist site, we were surrounded by vendors who would try and put items in our hands and then insist that we pay for them. When I got of the bus a man shoved a figurine in my arm and then refused to take it back. So I carefully placed the item on the ground and walked away.

In Egypt, there were street vendors set up at many of the tourist sites. At times we were surrounded by pushy vendors. Which made it impossible to shop. The nice thing about going with a tour group is that the tour guide will take you to some nice places to shop where there are no pushy vendors.

No matter where you are, if you come across pushy vendors you should never engage them. They will try to start a conversation with you and then tell you they have a special deal just for you and you'll never get away from them. Often times they will ask you where you are from as a way to start a conversation.

We call having to walk through these vendor areas, which are often at the exits often tourist sites, running the gantlet. It is best not to even make eye contact with them. If you look they will take that as a sign you are interested. Walk quickly.

The video below is my son and I walking through a small market. We were trying to get through it as quickly as we could. At one point we just couldn't get by two slow walking men. You can hear one man trying to guess where I am from. This market was mild compare to some we had to maneuver through. I even saw vendors hold on to a mans arm to keep him from walking away.

Some people in our tour group really got upset and let these pushy vendors get to them but if you go prepared its not really that big of a deal.

Remember:
* Don't make eye contact
* Don't look at them
* Don't speak to them or answer any questions.
* Completely ignore them or just shake your head and say no.
* Don't take anything from them including a "free gift"
* If they put something in your hand or on you and won't take it back, gently sit it on the ground and
walk away.

Cruise Ship Art Auctions: Legit or Junk

Art auctions are well known among cruisers, every cruise has them. There recently was a debate among cruisers over whether the art at these auctions were worth the money people pay or are they junk by unknown artists. Most of the art work offered at these auctions are lithographs or serigraphs, though sometimes they do have original paintings.

Some of the top selling artist on cruise ship auctions is Emile Bellet, Itzchak Tarkay, and Peter Max.

Emile Bellet was born in France in 1941. He began painting at the age of 15 and had his first exhibition when he was 19. He is a self taught artist.

Itzchak Tarkay was born in 1935 in Subotica on the Yugoslav-Hungarian border. Towards the end of World War II, Tarkay was sent with his family to the Mathausen concentration camp by the Nazis. Tarkay was only nine years old at this time. Tarkay’s family survived and returned home after the war and Itzchak developed a keen interest in art, He won a prize for excellence in painting while still in school in Subotica. In 1949 Tarkay and his family immigrated to Israel and were sent to the transit camp for new arrivals at Beer Yaakov.

Peter Max has painted for 6 U.S. Presidents. His art is on display in Presidential Libraries and U.S. Embassies. He has painted Lady Liberty annually since the bicentennial. He was named the official artist of the 2006 U.S. Olympic team. He also has been the official artist for 5 super bowls, world cup, the world series, the U.S. open, Indy 500, NYC Marathon and the Kentucky Derby.

Original paintings by these artist sell thousands of dollars. Some for tens of thousands. After looking at several sources, prices for the artists at the cruise ship auctions are fair prices.

I have heard some people on cruise ships say they are buying artwork as an investment. However, unless you buy an original painting I don’t see it as a good investment. There are so many copies sold, the investment value really isn’t there.

The moral of the story is, buy what you like because you like it. Put it on your wall and enjoy it and if someday its worth more than what you paid for it, it’s just icing on the cake. Think about how much you would pay for a nice picture at the store and that should be your spending limit.

Some of the pictures at the cruise ship auctions are really nice. I personally love Itzchak Tarkay and have looked at many different venues but the prices for his work are consistently high and out of my budget but I just love his watercolors.

I personally do enjoy attending the art auctions, if you get a good auctioneer they can be really fun to attend. Also I have won artwork three times! Its much easier to win a prize at the auction verses other drawings on the ship. At the art auction there is usually a small group of people but at the jewelry drawings there can be hundreds of people. And there are usually things that you can do to earn additional raffle tickets. The nice thing about the auctions is that you get a mini lesson on art and the different types of art and how they are created.

If you plan on attending the auction remember you are buying a piece of home décor not an investment piece. (unless its an original painting).

When traveling internationally I like to get some foreign currency before I lave home. This way I will have some cash (in the local currency) on hand when I arrive. I especially like to have small bills on hand for tips but when you exchange currency at the bank they usually want to give you large bills. The one thing you don't want to have to do is ask for change from a tip.

Making Phone Calls While Abroad

When traveling internationally, calling home can be very expensive. Forget making cell phone calls, it will cost you a fortune in roaming charges. Back in the “old days” I use to buy an international calling card which usually worked pretty well. However there were a few occasions when our hotel or bed & breakfast didn’t have a phone in the room and I had to use a nearby pay phone, which was not very convenient plus some of the pay phones wouldn’t work with the calling cards.

When my son and I traveled to Egypt I purchased an unlocked, international cell phone. The phone would work with any local cell phone tower so there were no roaming charges. I simply pre-purchased minutes which cost about .25 a minute. Not cheap but I could re-load it at any time over the phone and the phone worked great from anywhere. I even called home while on a river boat sailing down the Nile.

Today however, you have much better options for calling home, the internet. Here are the top three companines:

Most Memorable Customs Encounter

Whenever I go through customs at a airport, Itake the process very seriously. Customagents have a lot of power and can refuse you entry or delay you for anextended period of time. The generalrule is you don’t joke around or make small talk and only speak when spokento. But all that pretty much went outthe window when my family and I were going through customs in Johannesburg, SouthAfrica.

Our flightlanded in Johannesburg at the same time as a large group of Chinesetourists. We all arrived at customs atthe same time. After waiting for sometime, we finally made it to the front of the line. There was an agent standing at the frontdirecting people which line number to get in. We were told to get in line number 6 and to stand in a single file line. My husband was in front of my son and I. He approached the booth and handed the agenthis passport. Just as he did this littleChinese man came running up chattering a mile a minute. With one hand he pushed on my husband’sshoulder to move him out of the way and with the other hand waved him off.

I wishpictures were allowed in customs because the look on the agents face waspriceless. I couldn’t help butlaugh. The custom agent, who was a largewoman with the biggest afro I have ever seen, said to the man “are you serious, you need to go to the back of theline.” But the man just kept talking andgesturing wildly. My husband and I wereboth cracking up.

The man justkept pushing his way in between my husband and the counter all the timechattering no stop. Finally the customsagent snaps at the Chinese man saying: “Do I look like I speak Chinese!” After which she pointed to the back of theline.

Finally someonewho knew the man stepped in, took him by the arm and escorted him to the backof the line. The agent then says: “Didyou see that man, he’s crazy!” I triedto keep a straight face and be serious but it was useless we were laughing sohard our stomachs hurt.

After wefinally get through customs we started walking towards the exit when I saw thiscute little beagle sitting next to a uniformed custom officer. I made a comment about how cute the dog wasand then the officer started walking towards me. I thought he was just walking over to show usthe dog but instead he tells me the dog” hit” on me. I about had a heart attack, how could thisdog hit on me, I didn’t have any drugs. Which is what I told the officer. Then he informs me the beagle is a fruit sniffing dog and asked me if Ihad any fruit on me. I said no but thenmy husband informed me he had put an apple from the plane in my jacketpocket. Apparently bringing in fruit wasagainst the rules. I thought, oh my goshI am going to prison over an apple. Butthe officer was very nice when he saw how freaked out I was and told me I justhad to throw it in the trash. Afterwhich he asked if I still thought the dog was cute. He still was cute but I was anxious to getout of that airport.

Give Carnival A Gold Star!

On August 21 hurricane Irene was heading towards San Juan, Puerto Rico as Carnival and Royal Caribbean are preparing set sail. San Juan officials decided it would be too dangerous for the ships to leave at their scheduled times and directed both ships to leave 3-4 hours early. Carnival Victory was scheduled to leave port at 6:00 pm and Royal Caribbeans Serenade was scheduled to depart at 8:30 pm.

The problem was that a number of passengers had not checked in and boarded the ships yet. So about 445 passengers were left behind with no prior notification the ships would be departing early.

While both cruise line's were faced with the same dilemma they choose to handle the situation very differently. Carnival who had 300 passengers left behind in San Juan, the cruise line provided each of these passengers with a 2 night hotel stay in San Juan and air transportation to the first port in Barbados where they were able to board the ship. This service was provided for all the passengers regardless of whether or not they booked their airline tickets through the cruiseline.

Royal Caribbean, however chose to handle the situation a little differently. With 145 stranded passengers, only those who booked their flights through the cruiseline were given a 2 night hotel stay and air transportation to the ships first port in Aruba. The rest of the passengers, 135 people, were left on their own to fend for themselves. They had to pay for their own hotel stay plus airfare to Aruba to catch up with the ship.

Royal Caribbean says the guests expenses were their own responsibility since this was a weather related event and it was the port officals who directed the ships to depart early. The cruiseline apologized for the inconvenience. (Big whoop!) They should have done something to help those passengers but chose not to.

So I have to give Carnival a gold star for stepping up and taking care of their passengers. You couldn't buy publicity this good. They did right by their customers and I've always said customer service can make or break a business. Kudos to Carnival.

Celebrity's New Ship

Celebrity’s new ship Silhouette debuts with some extra, original features. The ship offers a one of a kind dining experience at the 58 seat Lawn Club Grill where guests can grill their own meat and vegetables or make a pizza using an outdoor pizza oven, all under the guidance of one of the ships chefs. Each party selects a person to act as grill master who is in charge of preparing the food with the help of a chef who will teach the group leader techniques of grilling. The venue will also feature daily cooking classes and demonstrations. The restaurant will offer guests the opportunity to host their own party for $30.00 per person.

Adjacent to the Lawn Club Grill are eight hammocks and two oversize Adirondack chairs as well as eight cabanas known as The Alcoves, overlooking the ocean. A new outdoor casual dining venue, Porch, will offer breakfast pastries and lunch paninis as well as a number of specialty drinks.

At Michael’s Lounge you can choose from 64 different international beers including Belgian brews, high-end biere de champagne, Dues Brus Des Flanders Cuvee as well as many other ales, lagers, porters, stouts, wheat beers, ciders and lambics. The lounge will also offer gourmet snacks, artisanal spirits, beer tasting, live entertainment and 46 inch flat screen Tv’s.

American Airlines New Seat Program

American Airlines announced the introduction of a new Preferred Seats Program for premium and full fare customers. The new seats will be complimentary for Elite and full fare customers and their travel companions as well as active duty military personnel and their accompanying family members.

Options will include window and aisle seats towards the front of the plane as well as exit row seats. Non-premium customers can purchase premium seats starting at $4.00 per segment.

The expanded seating options are available to all customers 24 hours prior to departure through the self-service kiosks, phone reservations and on the AA.com website.

The Right Way to Complain

When you travel you have to do it with an open mind. Even though you may have a set itinerary, plans can change at any time for numerous reasons. Cruise itineraries often change due to weather conditions. Some things, while they may be a disappointment, you can’t fault the cruise line or tour company, especially when customer safety is the issue. For example, while on a cruise one of the scheduled ports was skipped due to the rough seas in that area. Of coarse this was the port we were looking forward to the most but it wasn’t the cruise line’s fault, it was mother natures. Cruise lines don’t like to skip ports but if it would put passengers in harms way, they have no choice. I would much rather have to skip a port then see someone get hurt.

However, there are something’s in which the travel provider is at fault and should offer some sort of compensation to the traveler. For example, while on a 11 day Hawaiian cruise on the second night at about 2am I awoke to the sound of running water. At first I thought maybe my son hadn’t turned the bathroom faucet off all the way, so I got up to turn it off when I stepped onto the carpet it was soggy. I turned the light on and saw water running out from underneath the bathroom door. When I opened the door there was suds and bubbles 3 feet high. Water and suds were coming up from the shower drain. Maintenance got the water stopped and put a bunch of towels down on the carpet. The next morning while we were in port and the crew cleaned up the carpet and put a heater in the cabin to dry the carpet.

Two nights later, again around 2am, it happened again only this time the next morning was a sea day so we were told they couldn’t use the heater and there were no other available cabins to move us into. So we had to walk around on soggy and musky smelling carpet for 3 days. And if that wasn’t bad enough at the end of the cruise my family, along with many other passengers, got food poisoning. I got severely sick and ended up in the emergency room.

So I decided to write a complaint. There is a right way and a wrong way to complain.

· Your complaint should be in writing.

· Make sure you put the date you write it on the letter.

· Keep a copy for yourself.

· Provide as much detailed information as possible, including your travel dates, all the passengers names, your reservation number, and details about what went wrong.

· Do not use cuss words.

· Do not appear to be angry and aggressive. While the issue may be a big deal to you, don’t over
react. You are more likely to get somewhere if you are polite and professional.

· Be specific about what you want, some sort of compensation. You can request specific compensation but I would only do so if the issue was severe. Often times its best to request compensation but leave it up to them to make an offer.

· Be specific about what you will do if they do not offer you expectable compensation. Remember, do be greedy or unreasonable about what you want. If you are reasonable, you are more likely to get what you want.

· Provide copies of any supporting documentation and pictures. If possible take pictures or video of the issue, a dirty room, something broken, etc…

· Include any frequent flyer or loyalty program numbers.

· Address your letter to the customer relations department.

In my situation with my Hawaiian cruise, in my letter I explained in detail what had happened, provided pictures of the subs as well as copies of the paperwork from the hospital along with a copy of the receipt for my co-pay. I also let them know besides the issues we did enjoy our cruise. I wanted them to know I wasn’t excepting a full refund, which wasn’t reasonable because we did, for the most part, have a great time, but I did feel some sort of compensation was called for.

I received a phone call from the cruise line, the woman basically let me know she wasn’t going to do anything for me. I remained calm and thanked her for her time. Then I wrote a second letter. This letter was basically a copy of the first letter except I added information about the phone call and added what I intended to do if they didn’t offer some sort of compensation.

Again you need to be polite, professional and non-aggressive. I kindly stated that I was going to write letters to all the large cruise magazines telling them my story. I also let them know I was a member of Cruise critic’s, a very large online cruise community and I would be posting a review about my cruise and my experience with customer relations. I also intended to write a letter of complaint to possible organizations that have anything to do with the cruise industry, I included a list of organizations and companies. I closed the letter with a 30 day deadline to be compensated before I started writing letter and reviews. I never used aggressive, angry or fowl language. I simply stated the facts and tried to come across as an educated, professional person.

Do not make crazy, outrageous, non-realistic threats. If your threats are too crazy they will know you have no ground to stand on.

Two weeks later I received a letter stating I had been given $2500,00 in cruise credit which was enough to completely cover a Caribbean cruise for my family of 3. I was very happy with my results.

Vendor Harassment in Caribbean

If you have ever cruised to the Caribbean you know how bad the vendors at the ports can be. The minute you step off the ship you are surrounded by aggressive peddlers. While we were in in Jamaica the peddlers would come up to passengers and put items in their hands and then insist they pay for them. When one shoved something into my hand I simply laid it on the ground and kept walking. It can be very annoying and intimidating.

But times are changing and port officials and cruise lines have heard the complaints and are finally doing something about it. In Jamaica, a new, multimillion dollar port has been built by the government of Jamaica and Royal Caribbean Cruises LTD to accommodate RCCL's mega ships the Oasis and the Allure.

Jamaica's Tourism Minister says any vendors caught harassing tourists with aggressive tactics will face heavy penalties. Vendors must also register in order to sell their products when ships are in port. Vendors must be local residence and are required to carry a valid ID. The number of vendors allowed to sell at one time is also limited.

Other Caribbean countries have also followed Jamaica's example and are now requiring vendors to register, carry ID or a peddlers license and limited the number of vendors allowed.

In Bermuda vendors are allow to sell their goods on the street but the only people who can approach cruise passengers are transportation providers such as Taxi's or mini bus drivers.

Software to Spot Fake Reviews

More and more travelers are relying on reviews by other travelers when making their travel arrangements. The problem is some travel product providers have placed fake reviews.

Four students at Cornell University have created a software program that sniffs out bogus positive hotel reviews on sites such as TripAdvisor and Yelp.

Great Britain is one of the top destinations in Europe and its well deserved. The stunning countryside views, rich history are a favorite among travelers, not to mention the shopping! And on top of that, they speak English…sort of.

It is also extremely easy to get around. The rail system makes traveling around England and Scotland quite easy. There are a number of different train passes to choose from.

Point to Point – This is a single destination ticket.

Consecutive Pass – These passes are good for the consecutive number of days you purchase. The days start with the first day of use. You can purchase passes for 3,4,8,15,22 days or one month.

Flexi Passes – With these passes you purchase the number of days you want, 3,4 8, or 15 days, and you can travel any days (up to the number of days purchased) within a 2 month period.

The nice thing about the multi-day passes is that you can jump on and off the train as much as you want. There is a limit to the number of days you can travel but not to how many stops you can make.

On one trip I started in London than traveled up the west coast of Britain up to Scotland and back down the East coast. It was a great way to see the country.

Itinerary:

Two days in London

Took train from London to York – about a 1 hour trip.
York is a great city founded by the Romans in 71 AD. There is a great deal of history, you can walk the ancient city walls, or picnic at the ruins of St. Mary Abbey. And don’t forget to stop by and visit to the Jorvik Viking Center where you can take a journey in a time car, witnessing the sights, sounds and even the smells of a Viking city as it was 1000 years ago. After departing your time car you can visit the archaeological museum where there are hundreds of artifact.

And of coarse you’ll want to check out York Minster which is the largest Gothic Cathedral in Northern Europe. It dates back to the medieval times, and admission to the main body of the Minster is free (and who doesn’t like free). I love York, it has that small town feeling and you feel like you stepped back in time. It’s just amazing.

Overnight in York.

Took train from York to Edinburgh – 2 ½ to 3 hour trip.
Right next door to the train station is nice shopping mall. Upon leaving the train station, hang a right, at the corner make a left. There are a number of shops along this street as well as a McDonalds not too far up.

Take a cab up to Edinburgh Castle. You can catch a cab up to the castle, its up a fairly steep hill or you can catch a city bus tour which will stop at the castle. You can get off the bus, tour the castle and then just catch the next bus that comes through, about every 15-20 minutes. The city tour is great and I highly recommend it. Personally I like to walk the Royal Mile, starting at the castle, this way its down hill. There are lots of shop and places to eat along the Mile. At the clock tour there are tours of the city catacombs which is a really interesting tour. Also a long the mile is a very old grave yard which is interesting to look around. The Mile ends at Holyrood Palace which is the official residence of the monarch in Scotland.

Holyrood Abbey was founded by David I, King of Scots in 1128, and the Palace has served as the principal residence of the Kings and Queens of Scots since the 15^th century. Queen Elizabeth II spends one week in residence at the Palace each summer.

Spent most of the day in Edinburgh.

Took train from Edinburgh to Stirling, Scotland – less than an hour trip.
While we were in Edinburgh there was a business conference going on so there were no reasonably priced rooms available so we decided to go on to Stirling where we had no problem getting a room at a bed & breakfast and since it was only about a 50 minute ride it was a good option.

My favorite things in Stirling is the remains of Stirling Castle. It is one of the largest and most important castles, both historically and architecturally, in Scotland. It is surrounded on three sides by steep cliffs and dates back to the 15^th and 16^th centuries. Several Scottish Kings and Queens have been crowned here including Mary, Queen of Scots in 1543, with the last being in 1746.

If you are a fan of Braveheart you can checkout local hero William Wallace’s Monument. Many historical battles have taken place in Stirling.

You can also pay a visit to a 19^th century prison.

Overnight in Stirling.

Took train from Stirling, Scotland to Carlisle, England – about 2 ½ hour trip.
Carlisle is a medieval market town with lots of interesting attractions. Carlisle Castle was first built by William Rufus who was William the Conqueror’s son and has witnesses many attacks over its 900 years of history. In 1567 it served as a temporary prison for Mary, Queen of Scots and in 1745 rebel soldiers loyal to Bonnie Prince Charlie were incarcerated here.

Other sightseeing attractions include a cathedral founded in 1122, Hadrian’s Wall, the Citadel Originally erected in 1541 by Henry VIII to strengthen the southern approach to the city, Houghton World in Miniature with over 50 miniature rooms as well as lots of other things to do.

Overnight in Carlisle.

Train from Carlisle to Penrith – 15 minute trip.
Penrith is a great little city. Our primary reason for stopping here was to visit the Lilliput Lane visitor center. My mom was a collector and there was a cottage that you can only buy at the visitor’s center. You can also watch some of the artist painting cottages.

Train from Penrith to Chester – 2 hour trip.
Chester was one of the last towns to fall to the Normans and its one of the most well preserved walled cities in Great Britain. The city has some amazing black and white architecture. The gothic style Cathedral has 1000 years of history and is one of the best persevered cathedrals.

If you are looking for something different to do you can check out the Chester Mystery Play. The history of these plays can be traced back to the 14^th century. Chester is one of the few places in the country where some of the original medieval scripts still survive. They were banned in 1578 but are alive and well today.

Train from Chester to London – 2 hour trip.

2 Days in London.

This was a lot to pack into 8 days but it was an amazing trip!

New Galapagos Regulations

In an effort to protect the ecosystem of the Galapagos Islands, new rules will go into affect in February. The new rules will prohibit any tourist vessel from visiting the same island landing site more then once in a 14 day period.

As a result tour companies will have to change their itineraries and staff members will have to adapt to touring new regions. New brochures will also have to be printed reflecting the new itineraries.

New Airline Laws Challenged

ASTA (American Society of Travel Agents) along with 2 discount airlines (Spirit and Allegiant) are challenging the Department of Transportation's (DOT) new passenger protection rules set to go into affect on August 23, 2012.

The new rules require that agency websites that display fares must explain that baggage fees might apply and direct users to the airlines site or to a page on the agent's site, that will explain these fees.

Travel agents claim that sending clients to an airlines site is commercially damaging. And to set up such a page on their site is too costly as well as leaves them open to out dated information which may damage their reputation.

The second rule being challenged is in regards to e-ticket confirmations in which agents would be required to include the passengers free baggage allowance, any fee for carry on bags as well as charges for first and second checked luggage. ASTA says there is no system in place that will enable agents to provide this information.

ASTA originally supported these new laws but only in the event a law was also passed that required airlines to make all their baggage and other ancilllary fee information accessible in the GDS (Global Distribution System), which was no passed. Agents do not want to be held respobsible for airlines lack of sharing information.

ASTA is also challenging DOT's requiring price advertising rule which requires all taxes and mandatory fees be included in all fare quotes. I like this rule. Nothing is more irritating than finding a really great price on a ticket, being excited about your find and finding out the taxes and fees are $400-$600.

Travel agents are also upset about the new law that will require airlines to give a full cash refund for tickets canceled within 24 hours of purchase, including non-refundable tickets.

When You've Got to Go: Restrooms Around the World

Using the restroom while traveling abroad is an adventure in itself. On my first international trip, I was in London looking for a restroom. Being in a large upscale store like Harrod’s you would think that it wouldn’t be an issue. I couldn’t find the restroom so I approached a sales clerk and asked her where the restroom was. She looked at me with a puzzled look on her face and then asked me if I wanted to lay down. I said “no, I needed to use the bathroom.” She replied “so you want to take a shower.” Finally I said “no, I have to pee.” She then told me to go to the “WC.” I soon learned in England if you want to go to the bathroom you need to ask for the “WC” or the “Toilet.”

When using the Toilets in foreign countries you should keep a sense of adventure and be prepared to pay. Museums and restaurants will offer free restrooms so take advantage of these when possible and always carry a packet tissue with you. Some of these restrooms are poorly supplied or you may find that someone has removed all the toilet paper and is asking for tips in exchange for a couple of squares of toilet paper. We experienced this at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo and I completely understand, especially in these extremely poor countries, people are trying anything to make a few dollars but when you’ve got to go and you don’t have any change it can be an issue. Fortunately, I always carry tissue with me.

If you are going to use a bathroom in a restaurant try to find one with outdoor seating, this way when it won’t be so obvious that you are just there to use the bathroom. Most fast food places will have free public bathrooms, although sometimes the bathroom code is printed on your purchase receipt.

When using public restrooms you may be in for a bit of culture shock. In a Starbucks restroom in Bern, Switzerland you will find the bathroom is decorated with blue lights to make it impossible for junkies to find their veins to keep them from using the bathroom to get high.

Train stations often have restrooms you can use for a small fee. Keep some of your change handy because some are coin operated. Some even have showers available. They are usually well kept. In some large European cities such as Paris, London and Amsterdam, they have coin operated public toilets on the street. They kind of resemble a phone booth but more private of coarse. You insert a few coins and the door pops open. You then have 15 minutes to do your business before the door pops open again after which the facility then disinfects itself which sometimes involves the floor tipping while disinfectant shoots out. You do not want to be in there when that happens. Though you will be extremely clean when you come out!

Some cities actually have not so private public urinals for men right on the street call Pissiors, no kidding.

If you are a train passenger you can use the free toilets on the train however some can be quite the adventure. While on the train in Egypt I used the restroom on the train. If you have ever seen the movie The Mummy II with the scene where the little boy is using the nasty bathroom on the train, its not that far off from reality. When I flushed the toilet water came shooting straight out of the bowl and onto the wall on the opposite side. You could also see the tracks below when you flushed. So in some situations you might want to think twice about going while the train is sitting in the station because you will be sharing more than you think.

Though most places have western style toilets sometimes you will come across a squat toilet, also known as a Turkish toilet. Basically this is a porcelain hole in the ground that is flanked by platforms for your feet and just as it sounds, you squat.

The moral to the stories is when you travel abroad go with an open heart, open mind and your own tissue.

Smoking Only in Limited Areas on Cruise Ships

Spa cabins and their balconies will remain completely smoke free.

Starting January 15, 2012 Princess cruise lines will not allow smoking in any of their cabins including the balconies.

Princess Cruise Line Pulls Ships Out

Princess cruise line pulls it ships out of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico due to security concerns. Cruises departing Nov. 19, Dec 10 and Dec 31 have canceled stops in Puerto Vallarta.

Earlier this year they canceled calls to Mazatlan. Princess would not elaborate on the security concerns but said they will replace these ports withs stops in Cabo San Lucas and Ensenada.

When shopping in foreign countries your are sometimes charged a VAT tax, Value Added Tax. But some shoppers don’t realize that this tax is refundable to nonresidential shoppers.

You just need to ask the shopkeeper for a VAT receipt. Sometimes there is a required minimum purchase however this is usually not a large amount, it can be as low as a few dollars. Every store may not offer VAT refunds but a lot do so its worth asking. While this tax refund is highly available in Europe other foreign countries are starting to offer it. Depending on how much you shop, this refund can be a nice chunk of change. This tax ranges from 5% to 25% so its worth getting the refund and its not hard to do.

Besides European countries, Singapore, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Thailand and Mexico are all now offering VAT refunds.

After making your purchase, ask the shopkeeper for a VAT refund receipt, keep this receipt with your purchase receipt. Keep all of these receipts from all your purchases throughout your trip together. When you go to the airport to leave the country take your receipts to the customs desk before you go through security. Make sure you have all of your purchased items accessible as the custom agent may request to see them. The custom agent will stamp your VAT forms. You can then pack your purchased items in your suitcases and check them (except in Australia where you will be required to carry on these items).

After going through security take your stamped VAT tax receipts to the VAT tax refund kiosk for a immediate refund or to have a check mailed to you. Some countries will charge a commission fee for the refund.

Disney's expansion plans include a Resort & Spa on the of Oahu which will open at the end of August. The family friendly resort will carry on Disney's legacy in storytelling. The resort will feature a 52,000 square foot home that will house the resorts children's enrichment program. There will also be a 18,000 square foot spa, a lagoon with a water tube pool.

The companies cruise line will include new itineraries with a Hawaiian cruise leaving from Los Angeles.

Disneyland in Anaheim will be debuting its new 3-D Star Tours this summer and the Disney World Resort in Florida will be expanding Fantasyland. Ground has also been broken for a new resort in Shanghai.

The big question here is will they be raising the price of tickets?

A call from the Titanic? Not this time. It was Holland America's Westerdam. On this ships May 10 cruise to Alaska the 1900 passenger ship was struck and damaged near Hubbard Glacier putting a dent in the ships hull. The hull itself was not breached and the damage was considered mild and the ship continued on with its regular itinerary.

Mild damage or not I am sure it scared a few people. I have heard small pieces of ice hit the side of a cruise ship and it makes a fairly loud sound, even though the piece of ice was small. I can only imagine how loud a piece large enough to den the hull must have sounded.

I wonder if anyone slept with their life jacket on?

Murder at Sea: Mystery Authors and Mayhem Revealed

High Tide's Murder At Sea offers mystery readers the opportunity to spend a week in the Caribbean with up to 24 New York Times best-selling and Pulitzer Prize-winning authors, including Don Winslow, Robert Ward, Stephen Hunter, Joanne Fluke, John Hart, Lisa Jackson and Kate White, editor-in- chief of Cosmopolitan magazine and author of the best-selling Bailey Weggins series.

Sailing aboard Royal Caribbean's new 16-story Allure of the Seas, the largest cruise liner in the world, Murder At Sea participants will get a "behind-the-curtain look" experience with their favorite writers, Weber says.

Panel discussions, intimate author lunches and dinners, cocktail parties and author book signings invite readers to get up close and personal with the authors regularly throughout their vacation. And, Weber says, the authors will be as accessible as any other cruiser onboard.

At a typical book signing or author panel, "there's no finding out after that first or second drink how that character really came into play," Weber says. During the cruise, readers will have an opportunity to get comfortable and let the author get to know them -- who they are and why they like their work -- which is something authors don't get to do often, he says.

"You never know what could happen, you could be a character in that guy's next book," Weber says.

Award-winning crime novelist Bill Fitzhugh has never been on a cruise, but he jumped onboard immediately when approached by Weber to join Murder At Sea. He is looking forward to exploring the ports and meeting readers.

"After spending the better part of the year alone in a room working on a book, it's nice to get out and meet people. Especially on a cruise ship in the Caribbean," Fitzhugh says.

Lost Bet

Passengers on the May 1 Air Asia flight from London to Kuala Lumpar got a big treat on board. Richard Branson the chairman of Virgin Airlines dressed up in a female flight attendant uniform complete with makeup and high heels. All due to a lost bet.

Branson made the wager with Air Asia's CEO Tony Fernandes over which of their Formula One racing teams would finish ahead of the other and the loser would have to dress up as a flight attendant and work a flight. The looser Branson decided to do it in style and added a live band and magic show to the flight as well.

Trouble in Cairo

The world famous Egyptologist Zahi Hawass, who was recently re-appointed minister of antiquities, was sentenced to one year in prison by an Egyptian court. The issue being over the bidding process by companies that wanted to run a new book store in Cairo's Egyptian Museum. Another bookseller in the museum was not happy with the biding process and filed charges. Hawass claims on his blog everything is fine and he is not going to be serving any jail sentence nor is he planning on stepping down again from his ministerial role.

New Consumer Rights For Airline Passengers

The Department of Transportation (DOT) has announced new and improved rules to protect airline passengers, yeah! Here’s the scoop:

* The rules for passengers getting stuck on the tarmac now apply to foreign airlines while they are at
   U.S. airports.

* The tarmac rules also now will apply to smaller airports

* There is a 3 hour limit on how long passengers can sit on the tarmac on domestic
   flights at major airports.

* There is a 4 hour limit on how long passengers can sit on the tarmac on international
   flights at major U.S. airports.

* Airlines, air-inclusive packages and advertisements must state the full fare to be paid
   by passengers including any taxes and fee’s. Including any booking fees or service
   fees imposed by travel agents or travel booking sites.

Consumers have the right to know exactly how much they will be required to pay
with no hidden surprises.

* Advertisements cannot use the term “one way” when a roundtrip purchase is required.
   They may state it as “each way.”

* Airlines or travel sellers may not include fees for optional services that a passenger
can only decline by “opting out.”

Sometimes companies will automatically include optional items into a package in
order to up sell products. Passengers have to decline these options otherwise they will
be included and you will be charged for them even though they are not mandatory.

This new laws says companies cannot quote you a price that includes items you have
the choice to opt out of purchasing.

* When a passenger pays in full, companies are not permitted to charge post-purchased
    increases except for government imposed taxes and fees and even then only if the seller
    obtains the customer’s written acknowledgement of the potential for such as increase
    prior to purchase.

* Incases where only a deposit has been made and has not been paid for in full, companies are
   permitted to pass on increases in fares, fee, surcharges or taxes but only if the passenger has signed a
consent form at the time the initial deposit was made.

* U.S. and foreign airlines must prominently display any increase in baggage fees or any change in
checked luggage allowances on their home page for 3 months after the change goes into effect. A
link to a pop-up is allowed.

* Websites operated by intermediaries must notify consumers on the first screen that displays a fare
quote that baggage fees might apply and must indicate where consumers can find information on
baggage fees.

* E-ticket confirmations must include specific information on any free baggage allowance as well as
any applicable fees for carry-on bags or any first and second checked luggage fees for each passenger
  on a specific flight.

* U.S. and foreign airlines must display their U.S. websites all fees for optional services in one central
place.

* Code sharing partners are required to specify which carrier’s baggage allowance and fees will apply.
   Also on international itineraries to or from the U.S. the baggage allowances and fees applied at the
beginning of the itinerary will remain in place throughout the entire trip.

* Airlines must disclose on their websites any differences between their optional services and fees and
those of the carriers operating the flight.

* When a passenger is compensated for denied boarding an automatic inflation adjustment for future
   years must be applied.

* Crews must first ask for volunteers to be bumped on an overbooked flight. If they offer vouchers as
  compensation they must also make clear that cash compensation is also available.

* Passengers involuntarily bumped will not be entitled to any compensation if they can be rerouted so
  that they arrive at their destination or next stop over destination within an hour of their original
arrival time.

If a passenger can be rerouted to arrive within 2 hours (or 4 hours on international flights) of their original arrival time the compensation is 200% of the fare to a maximum of $650. Otherwise the payment is 400% of the fare to a maximum of $1300.

In other words, if your ticket cost up to $325 your compensation would be $650 which is 200%. If your ticket was less the $325 you would get 200% of the cost.

If your ticket cost more then $650, your would get 400% up to a maximum of $1300.

* If you bought your ticket with frequent flyer miles the cash compensation should be calculated on
the lowest fare sold for that flight.

Silversea Cruiseline Offers Culinary Classes

When you think about cruise lines Silversea's isn't usually one that pops into your head. But the luxury cruise line has some great amenities. One of the great things they are offering is a complimentary, interactive cooking school.

The curriculum is hosted by Silversea culinary trainer David Bilsland who was educated in classic French cooking and is the former chef instructor at the Le Cordon Bleu in London.

The curriculum for each cruise is designed to showcase the cultural flavor on the countries on each itinerary. Some voyages will include a "Market to Plate" experience in which guests will get an escorted tour of a local market followed by a cooking class featuring the local goods.

The nice thing about these classes is that you don't have to sign up ahead of time, you just have to show up. On a Holland America cruise I took a few years ago, they offered a cooking class but limited it to only a few people and you had to pre-register for the class. There was a mad dash of guests trying to get signed up for the class.

The cooking classes will cover topics from basic knife skills and kitchen terminology to sauces and baking. Guests will also be provided with take home recipes.

Disney Cruise Line Adds New Homeports

Disney cruise line will be adding homeports in New York, Seattle and Galveston with sailings starting in 2012. They will also being adding a 15 day round trip intinerary from Los Angeles to Hawaii.

Starting in May 2012 the cruise line will have 8 day cruises to from New York to the Bahamas. With this itinerary each guest will get a one-day Walt Disney World Park Hopper pass and transportation between the ship and the Disney World.

Alaskan cruises will start in 2012 from Seattle.

Recovering Egypt

The U.S. State Department downgraded its travel warning to Egypt, but still warning travelers to consider the risks. The revolution in Egypt has had a devastating effect on a economy that heavily depends on the tourism industry. Heba, a freelance tour guide said before the uprising she was fully booked through 2013 and now her agenda is completely empty. A spokesperson for Abercrombie & Kent Tours said he has never before seen 100% cancellation. Hotels have gone from 90% occupancy to 2%.

It is estimated that tourism was bringing in $25 million a day and 2.5 million people in Egypt work directly or indirectly in the tourist industry. Which translate, when taking into consideration the families, to 10 million people being affected by the loss of tourist income.

During the revolution Cairo’s Egyptian Museum was looted with a total of 54 objects being lost or destroyed. When my son and I visited the museum in 2009 one of the first comments I made to my son was about the lack of security in the museum. In most high end museums with priceless items you see security guards standing around. The items are well protects and visitors are carefully watched. In the Egyptian museum we saw many of the tour guides handling the items. There was just an obvious lack of security.

Now the museum is being guarded around the clock while officials are looking to improve the security system.

Many of the countries ancient sites are also in limbo. During the revolution the famous Egyptologist Zahi Hawass was named minister of antiquities but thirty-five days later he stepped down. He stated he was not sure what he would do next, meanwhile its not sure who is watching over and directing excavation on the ancient sites. Hawass had been involved in a project to build a protective wall around the pyramids at Giza and to install a train systems to transport tourist to the pyramids rather then them having to get to them by car, bus or camel.

Tour operators are beginning to restart tours. Insight Vacations who is the tour company that we traveled with, will begin tours on May 1, 2011. People are confident the tourist business will make a come back. The countries tourism industry has survived 2 Gulf wars and a terrorist attack on tourists in 1997 in which 60 tourists were killed.

I think once a permanent government is in place things will settle down and attention will be re-focused on bringing the tourist back. Hopefully this campaign will come with some really good travel deals. Which is what I think besides safety, will be what really lures the tourist in.

Ryanair Adds New Fee

Ryanair will be adding a new fee of 2 euros or all bookings made after April 4 to cover the cost of compliance with E.U. directives about accommodating passengers whose trips are canceled or disrupted by so-called “force majeure” events such as natural disasters.
Ryanair states they have incurred additional costs of 100 million euros last year due to disrupted European air travel because of volcanic ash clouds, severe snowstorms and air traffic controller strikes. The airline feels its unfair for them to have to give refunds for air travel, pay for meals, hotels and phone calls every time a flight is disrupted due to events beyond their control. They point out that rail, ferry and coach operators have no such liability so why should they.

A lot of travelers are already ticked off about all the ridiculous fees we are charged every time we fly. Sometimes the fees and taxes are higher then the price of the ticket. We already over pay, yet the airlines is upset about handing out a $10 meal voucher or paying for a phone call. And how often do airlines pay for a hotel room when the delay is not their fault, not often. What about the delays and cancellations that are the airlines fault and no compensation is offered to passengers. Perhaps we should just call it even.

Hopefully other airlines won’t follow Ryanair’s example.

Orbitz Looses 3 Car Rental Companies

As o April 1, Orbitz stopped offering car rentals through Enterprise, National and Alamo. Though both sides claim they ended the relationship, Enterprise who operates National and Alamo as well, says Orbitz insisted on unacceptably high commission rates.

Orbitz has been offering Enterprise car rentals since 2001. A spokeswoman for Enterprise stated that many consumers may not be aware that Orbitz intentionally limit’s the number of brands offered on their website. Orbitz countered the claim stating they display results from 13 car rental companies.

Orbitz quickly pointed out that their issues with Enterprise is completely different then their issues with American Airlines which had to do with direct connect bookings. American Airlines has pulled its flights off Orbitz and their sister site CheapTickets.

Two Cruises to Commemorate Titanic’s 100th Anniversary

Miles Morgan Travel has organized two cruises (and possibly more) to commemorate the 100^th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. The two ships Miles has chosen, the 694 passenger Azamara Journey and the 1309 passenger Balmoral, were picked because they have that classic ship feel. One ship will leave from New York while the other ship will leave from Southampton, England. Both ships will rendezvous on April 15, 2012 on the actual site of the sinking.

Both ships are scheduled to depart on April 8, 2012, 100 years to the day the Titanic departed Southampton on its maiden voyage. Several descendents of the passengers or crew that died on the Titanic are expected to take the cruise.

While on board guests will enjoy expert lecturers who will guide passengers through the history of the titanic. Chefs will be re-creating the meals that were served on board. Some passengers are talking about dressing up in period costumes.

Both ships will make a stop in Halifax which became the final resting place for the Titanic’s so-called unclaimed victims. Passengers can visit the city’s Fairview Lawn Cemetery where many of the bodies recovered after the sinking have been interred.

Beginning in the spring of 2012 the ships the Crystal Symphony and the Crystal Serenity will go all-inclusive. Which means you won’t have to pay for all those little extras cruises cost you. New Rome Tourist Tax

Rome city council confirmed that there is now a tourist tax for all visitors staying in hotels in Rome. FIT and group tourist will now have to pay a tax directly to the hotel upon check out. This fee is NOT included in the price of the room.

4-5 Star Hotels: 3 Euros per person, per day for the first 10 days.

I recently came across a couple of websites, FlyL4L and Fare Buzz, that claimed they provided discounted business and first class airline tickets. They offer tickets for 50 to 70% off the retail price. It sounded too good to be true so I decided to put them to the test.

I priced airline tickets going from Los Angeles, California to Johannesburg, South Africa departing on June 1 and returning on June 8. Here are the results.

The corporations and manufacturers then sell these miles to L4L. Subsequently, L4L resells those miles to their customers as first and business class award air tickets. So basically they book a rewards ticket for you.

I’ve heard a lot of parents express concerns about whether they should take their children on a cruise or not. They are afraid they will be bored. But the cruise industry has become much more kid friendly over the years and now cater to families.

Most ships now offer free kids activities such as miniature golf, waterslides, rock climbing, ziplines, surfing, ice skating and kids pools, as well as colorful playrooms with computer games, toys and activities.

Most ships now offer drop off age specific programs where parents can drop off their kids and enjoy adult activities while the kids enjoy supervised activities with other children of the same age.

Many ships also offer after hours babysitting for a small fee. Some even offer babysitting on port days for parents who want to go on ashore or on an excursion without the kids. Its hard to go wrong with kids and a Disney cruise. The kids will enjoys a visit at the children’s activity center from the Toy Story, Monsters Inc characters as well as Tinker Bell herself. They can play miniature golf, basket ball, volleyball, or soccer on Goofy’s Sports Deck or go a few rounds in the digital sports simulator.

The kids will also enjoy splashing around the Finding Nemo themed water play area complete with a 765 foot long, four deck aqua ride in which guests will ride on a two person inflatable raft and zip around the edge of the top deck and 13 feet over the open ocean through a clear tube.

The Norwegian Epic
This mega ship has everything kids could want including one of the best water slides on the sea which involves sitting on a giant inner tube, sailing down a huge shoot and into a large open top bowl and a few quick spins. For the younger kids there is a splash pool complete with mini slides and spray fountains.

The are plenty of sports activities as well including a five route climbing wall, a trampoline with harness and cables so you can do a few flips, a 24 foot climbing cage called the “spider web.” a basketball court, batting cage and a two deck high video screen to watch sporting events on.

The ship also features a Nickelodeon characters breakfast.

Kids under 2 sail free when sharing a cabin with 2 adults.

Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas
Holding the titles of the two largest ships at sea, these mega ships offer an amazing amount of entertainment and activities. There are ten play areas right off the main boulevard including an open gym for romping, rooms for arts and crafts, kiddy theater productions and a space for science experiments.

Other activities include a water park, rock climbing, miniature golf, two surfing simulators, a basketball court, ice skating rink and a hand carved wooden carousel.

When its time for something to eat you can stop by the donut shop, pizzeria, ice cream parlor, cupcake shop, or Johnny Rockets or how about candy by the pound. There is also a shop that sells stuffed animals that you create and dress.

You can pre-order diapers and baby food. There is a drop off nursery for babies 6 months to 3 years.

Royal Caribbean’s Freedom Class Ships
These ships have huge playrooms and video arcades. Other attractions include a H2O water park, rock climbing, ice skating, a surfing simulator, miniature golf and basketball court.

You can stop by Ben & Jerry’s ice cream parlor for a sweet treat or Johnny Rockets diner for a burger and shake.

There are daily 45 minute “mom and baby” play dates, for kids 6 months to 3 years old, that focus on music, storytelling and Fisher-Price toys.

The Carnival Dream and Magic
Carnivals mega ships have some impressive features including a pair of 80 foot long racing slides, a 104 foot long enclosed spiral ride called the drain Pipe and the 303 foot long, four deck high, Twister corkscrew waterslide.

On the Magic which will debut in May 2011, there will be a sports square which will have a ropes course, suspended above deck.

The Best Travel Items I Ever Bought

I have to confess, I am a sucker for a cool travel gadget and there are so many to choose from. And while many do come in handy there are some items that make you say “boy, I am so glad I brought this with me.” Here are my top 3 items that made me say just that.

1. Pocket Flashlight
I can’t tell you how happy I have been to have this $2.00 flashlight with me. The place I was most grateful to have it was in South Africa. The first time was when we arrived at our accommodations. We were staying in a tree house (an amazing experience). After at the lodge at night and after a briefing at the main building we had to walk to our tree house which was down a dark pathway through the bush with only very small dim lights every now and then. And I am not too proud to say I was a little nervous. Fortunately we each had a small flashlight to light the way.

The second time that flashlight was our saving grace was while we were on a sunset game drive. It was completely dark out, the African bush is pitch back at night. Our driver who was not very familiar with the area we were in, became a little lost when we came across a large sink hole in the rode. Not knowing another way back to the lodge, he had us all get out of the jeep and walk around the sink hole. My first thought was he must be out of his mind! We had just passed a large group of very grumpy buffalos and it was so dark out you couldn’t see someone standing 5 feet from you. We made our way around the sink hole and waited for the driver to drive the jeep around it. As we all stood there watching, all we could see was the 2 headlights, then a thump and suddenly the headlights were pointing up. He had driven right into the hole. Now we had to walk back to the lodge. WALK, out of the bush at night! We all huddled together and with my $2 flashlight we walked back to the lodge. I can not tell you how happy I was to have that flashlight.

There are so many situations you could find yourself in where a flashlight would come in handy. You can easily find a small pocket size flashlight you can carry in your purse or bag and it doesn’t have to be an expensive one. I like the cheap ones so if they get broken or left behind I won’t feel too bad.

2. Portable DVD Player
This is a must especially if you have children. Whenever you travel there always seems to be a lot of down time. We always end up sitting around the airport for what seems like forever. There have been times when our flights were cancelled or delayed and we were facing long, boring hours at the airport with nothing to do. With the DVD player we could past the time watching movies. Even when we were on planes that had seatback TV screens, my son often found there was nothing he was interested in watch and ended up watching his own movies. I recommend getting an extra battery for longer flights. Often times you can find a plug at the airport you can use.

We also found the DVD player to come in handy when sitting around our hotel room (or even on a cruise ship). Often times when in a foreign country there is nothing to watch on TV so we pop in a movie. When my son was little sometimes it was hard for him to adjust to the time differences and settle down and go to sleep but if I put in a DVD for him he would lay down and watch it until he fell asleep. Now as a teenager he doesn’t usually like to watch the same programs as I do so he will bring along a few movies to watch.

3. International Cell Phone
An international cell phone is a unlocked cell phone which means it can use any signal that is available. Normally if you are in a foreign country your cell phone won’t work. It won’t work off of local signals but if you have a international unlocked cell phone you can use it in any country. Normal cell phones are locked so that they will only use signals available through your cell phone provider.

I got my first international cell phone when my son and I went on our trip to Egypt. My husband was not going with us and I wanted a way to be able to call him. I know from experience that sometimes its not possible to make international calls from some hotels. The phones work like a prepaid phone. You put however much money you want onto the phone which you can easily add more if you need it. You just call a toll free number from the phone and add how much money you want by credit card.

The phone I have worked great. I was actually able to called my husband while sitting on the balcony while sailing down the Nile on a river boat. The minutes will cost you more then a regular prepaid phone but its worth the extra money to have that peace of mind knowing you can call your family or friends if you need to while traveling internationally.

New Ships in 2011

2010 was a pretty impressive year for new cruise ships with Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas, the 5200 passenger mega ship and Norwegian Cruise Line' s Epic the 4100 passenger super ship. 2011 will have its fair share of new ships. Here's what we can expect:

Disney Dream - This ship is the largest in Disney's fleet with 14 decks. The ship boasts of a Aquaduck water coaster, character greetings and fist run movies. The cabins are spacious and have split bathrooms with the toilet and shower area separated. Makes it debut in January.

Carnival Magic - This 3690 passenger ship features its own privately brewed beer, Thirsty Frog Red. There is also a sports square complex, open air weight lifting facility, a two level mini golf course and a ropes course. The ship debuts in May

Seabourn Quest - This is the luxury yacht companies third in a trilogy of upscale ships. All of the suites have ocean views and granite bathrooms with his and hers sinks. At ports of call you can swim snorkel, kayak and water ski right from the ship with its built-in marina. The 450 passenger ship debuts in June.

Oceania Marina - This 1,258 passenger mid-size ship features six restaurants including one from eminent French chef Jacques Pepin, as well as a gourmet Asian inspired dinning room. You can take a cooking lesson at the Bon Appetit Culinary Center or learn from the artists-in-residence in t Artist Loft. The ship debuts in January.

Celebrity Silhouette - With 85% of the ships cabin having sweeping verandas, this 2886 passenger ship is sure to be a hit. Aqua Class staterooms include complimentary access to the Aqua Spa amenities an preferred seating at the healthy Blu restaurant. Guests can also stop by the Lawn Club for around of croquet on the freshly cut grass. Debuts in July

Costa Favolosa - This is is kid friendly with a open-air water playground, game room and teen area. Parents can pass their time at the Samara Spa, on the golf simulator or perhaps a ride on the Grand Prix simulator. And why not splurge on one of the six new amazing suites withits own private jacuzzi. The 3,000 passenger ship debuts in July.

Heart Broken Over Cairo

I have been watching the events unfold in Cairo over the last few days and am heart broken over the situation. Its has now gone beyond peaceful protesting and now people are being killed, homes and businesses are being looted. This morning I saw the museum in Cairo has been damaged and some have attempted to loot it. I saw a picture of men standing arm and arm around the museum trying to protect it from thieves. Its such sad situation.

When we were there we had a chance to meet some local people and were even invited into the homes of two people to meet their families. Now looters and criminals are attacking private homes, the homes of people who share their struggle. Its sad to think that the people we met may be having to fight to protect their families. We heard that at this point nobody can go out without some sort of weapon in their hands because of the mobs and gang violence.

This has now gone far beyond protesting their president. Tourism is a huge part of Egypt's economy so this situation is hurting a lot of people and their ability to provide for their families.

We fell in love with Egypt and its people while we were there and its hard to see all this ciaos. My thoughts are with the people of Egypt.

Decorating with Food

If you have ever been on a cruise you no doubt have seen those amazing food decorations and carvings. It is really something the things they can do with food. Here are directions for a few you can try yourself. Have fun impressing your friends.

Tomato Rose

Step 1
Select a tomato that is at room temperature.
Start at its tops, peel along its circumference, creating one long, thin strip of tomato skin approximately one inch wide. Slide the paring knife back and forth slowly and peel the skin shallow enough so that the seeds are not exposed. Do not detach the end of the peel from the tomato.

Step 2
Leave a circle at the base of the tomato approximately two inches in diameter and one-half inch thick unpeeled, to sere as the rose base.

Step 3
With the tomato base in one hand and the attached peel in the other, wrap the peel around the base as shown in the illustration. The longer the peel you have created, the more attractive rose you can make.

Watermelon Seahorse

Step 1
Cut off the end of a melon. Scrape away the skin from its front and use a pencil to draw a seahorse on the exposed area. Use your knife to cut along the dotted line marked “A”, cutting straight one inch deep and then sliding the knife down. Do the same along the “B” line, but slant the cut to meet the first cut and make a cavity around the shaded area.

Step 2
Trim the area marked “A” to elevate the nose and tail. Trim the areas marked “B: to elevate the seaweeds. Trim the area marked “C” with a slanted cut to elevate the body. Trim the areas marked “D” to elevate the fin of the seahorse.

Step 3
Trim away the area marked “A” surrounding the seahorse and seaweeds with a slanting cut approximately two inches long and one inch deep, creating a V-shape that exposes the red inner portion of the watermelon. Use the tip of the parting knife to carve the rugged body of the seahorse and the seaweeds.

Apple Birds

Step 1
Follow the line marked “A” to cut one-half inch from the bottom of the apple. Save this for the tail. Follow the “B” lines, making two cuts approximately one inch deep and meeting as shown in the illustration. Leave a one-inch wide area in the middle of the top of the apple.

Step 2
With the wedge you removed from the apple perform the same process you followed in step 1, making the cuts only one-eighth inch deep. Perform the same cuts on the remaining portion of the apple, making three or four cuts for attaching the wings. Attach the wings and tail with a toothpick.

Step 3
To make the bird’s head, cut away both sides of another apple, leaving a one inch wide area in the middle where the stem is. Following the dotted lines on illustration, cut away as marked. Carve a hole and insert an apple seed for the eye on each side. Attach the head to the body with a toothpick.

Carrot Flower

Step 1
Select a large, peeled carrot. Slightly round both ends and cut a 3 ½” slice into the top. Cut slanted slices partially down the side of the carrot, stopping at the middle. Make these slices as thin as possible. Turn the carrot over and do the same on the other side so that the slices meet to create the first petal.

Step 2
Trim both sides of the carrot lengthwise, rounding it slightly. Repeat the same process as you used to make the first petal, trimming both sides until you create at least five petals. The number of petals you will need depends on the size of the carrot.

Step 3
Round the corners of the remaining portion of the carrot. Carve crossing lines for the buds of the flowers. Slice a quarter inch thick carrot and pierce all the petals in alternate positions.
